Pollution in the Water

What exactly does it mean to have pollution in the ocean? This literally means that piles of garbage and waste are building up and up. The oceans literally have huge piles miles high. And people are wondering why we cant just scoop up the pollution. The pollution has allowed animals to make homes and shelters. So that is why we can not scoop up the garbage. Most of the pollution is plastic. The earthquake in Japan has also lead to the build up for this pollution.

Alternative Fuel Choices!!!

There are many different ways our society is producing alternative fuel sources. Some hybrids are being used. Another option is electric powered cars. They are also using Biodiesal fuel to power cars. This is made from animal fats and such. Some manufacturers are also producing cars without engines. Another way to power cars is hydrogen. They are taking ethanol from corn. There are some of the alternative fuel sources.

Views on gas prices

There are many different views on the gas price situation. Newt Ringrich is saying that if he is elected he will make gas prices reduce slot. He says that he will put gas prices down to two dollars. Obama said this is a bunch of crap. That is would be impossible for gas prices to go down that much. Obama approves of the gas prices stating that he cant really do anything about it. Rick Santorim also blames Obama for the gas prices. He is saying that Obama is afraid of global warming.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989.It spilled 260,000 to 750,000 barrels of crude oil. The captain was confirmed to be asleep when the ship crashed in Prince William Sound's reef. Then they were investigating and found out that he might of been drunk. There were alot of procedures that was not followed. There was many animals that was harmed in this oil spill. The clean uo cost was $287 million for actual damages and $5 billion for punitive damages.

Oils Spills

Many drilling companies are having problems with containing their oil spills. The companies are not checking on the lines and pipes of these major oil wells. This is causing accidents to happen and oil explosion and leakage. This can lead to alot of problems. In oceans alot of water and animal life is being indanger.

Water Testing!!!

The Pollutants that we tested for was Carbonate ion, Chloride ion, Chromate ion, Iron ion, Lead ion, Phosphate ion, and the Sulfate ion. We were unfortunate, and we did not have any results.

Chromium III VS. Chromium VI

In Environmental Chemistry, we watched the movie Erin Brockovich. This film was about Erin trying to discover why people around a water plant was getting very sick. She had to do some intense investigation to discover wht was is the water that was making the people sick. She found that Chromium was present in the water samples. But there is a difference between the differnet type of Chromium. There are several levels of Chromium. There are Chromium III and Chromium VI. A little dose of Chromium III is not bad for humans. The Chromium VI is the type that is cancerous and bad for humans to consume. The Chromium VI is the bad type of this element. The Chromium III is not as harmful. It is vital to the human body in small amounts. While the other Chromium is very deadly and causes health problems.

bioluminescence!!

Yes i have heard of bioluminescence. I have somewhat of an idea of what is it. It has to do with lights and organisms. I do not know of any organisms that have this trait. Some functions that i think that they have is to have to ablity to glow and attract mates and such. I think it can also scare away predators. Some questions i have is how an organism gets this trait. Is the chemical a gene or a natural response? Does this trait help the organism live? Does the trait help the organism produce offspring?

My Drinking Water

The water source that i have is Masontown Muni Water Works. The testing of my water has some very high chemicals. One of the most highest chemical is called Total Trihalomethanes(TTHMs). This chemical was very high in my water source. It says this chemical is way over the legal limit for regular drinking water. The other chemical that is high in my water is called Total Haloacetic Acids(HAAs). The taste of my water does not taste very good. It is cloudy and i just do not like the taste of it. It does not taste clean. This does concern me in a lot of ways. I do not want to drink unclean and unsafe water. This concerns me in a lot of ways.
